5 Ways to get Free Traffic to your Blog

Here are some ways you can get web traffic to your blog for free. Getting traffic to your blog is not easy. A new blog might get 10 - 20 vistor's daily. If your blog is good and updated frequently it will give you up to 100 - 200 vistor's daily. Some blogs like MrSikhNet will have up to 1000 vistors daily. For those who are using adsense to generate some income from your blog, then having 1000 vistors daily will help in the revenue thats generated. However if you just want your blog to be read by an international audience, then its essential you promote your blog. Below is 5 ways I find the most efficient in generating traffic to your site.

1. Tell your Family and Friends

Send an email out to all your friends and family members telling them about your new blog. Send an instant SMS or print the address of your blog on your business card and give it out to people. You could make a Car bumper Sticker with your blog address and Drive your car around town. Finally, add a Tell-a-friend script on your blog, this will enable vistors to invite their friends to check out your blog.

2. Submit to Blog and RSS directories

Whenever I start a new blog, the second thing I do after adding content is to list it on all the blog directories out there. Bloggers will read other people's blogs and they find these blogs via blog directories. The more directories your site is listed the better. You can find a comprehensive list here .

3. Use Technorati.com

Technorati is the best for bloggers when it comes to getting traffic. Using technorati tags on your blog will make it easier to be found when searched. Technorati uses a blog ranking system too. Based on the number of links to your blog from various websites, your blog is given a rank. The higher your rank the easier your blog is to find when people search for things.

Go to www.technorati.com and register your blog with them. They will give you a code you need to add on your blog. Technorati is the authority on what's going on in the world of weblogs. By adding your blog to technorati you will double your traffic.

4. Post comments on other people's blog's

When you add a comment to another person's blog, you will be able to add your blog URL to that comment. Curious readers will surf to your blog from the comment you left. Posting comments will increase your link-popularity and hence increasing your standing in search engines. Commenting will build blogger communities and ensure a steady flow of traffic from the blog communities.

5. Participate in Forums.

Some forums will allow you to add your Blog URL on the signature. So when you reply a post or create a thread, what essentially you are doing is promoting your blog to the readers of that forum. Participating in forums will increase you link popularity as well, which means that your blog will be listed higher in search engines like google and MSN.

What is Dropshipping? Finding Dropshippers - Its Advantages and Pitfalls!

What is Dropshipping

Dropshipping is a type of retailing where the retailer does not keep goods in stock, but instead passes the customer's order and shipment details to the wholesaler, who then dispatches the goods to the customer directly. The retailer makes their profit on the difference between the wholesale and retail price. Some retailers may still keep "show" items on display in stores, so that customers can inspect an item similar to those that they can purchase. Other retailers may only provide a catalogue or Internet presence.

Drop shipping can occur when a retailer receives a single large order for a product. Rather than route the shipment through the retail store, the retailer will arrange for the goods to be shipped directly to the purchaser.

Let us assume, you purchase an item from a dropshipping site for $20.00. You would sell that item for a price determined by you; let's use $35.00 plus $4.50 shipping for an example. After you collect the total payment of $39.50 from the customer and their mailing address, you would forward the $20.00 plus $4.50 for shipping to the wholesaler, and keep the $15.00 as profit, never having to touch the product, as the wholesaler ships it out to the customer.

In short, dropshipping is simply selling products for wholesale companies, sending them the address of the person who bought from you, and they ship the product to them. This is an incredible opportunity, most times for the cost of a meal at a restaurant, to start a profitable eBay business.

Many sellers on eBay also drop ship. Naturally a seller will offer an item as new and ship the item directly from the wholesaler to the highest bidder. The seller profits from the difference between the winning bid and the wholesale price, minus any selling fees from eBay.

Finding Dropshippers

Startups and individuals new to the dropshipping world generally face severe difficulty in finding legitimate and authentic dropshipping companies. Several online directories have popped up in recent times on the net which help to make this task easy.

Whilst looking for dropshippers, there is a general misconception that dropshipping companies who charge an initial fee to sign-up and open accounts with them are not considered genuine. Although this might be true in some cases however the reason for charging this fee is that, these companies want to make sure that they are dealing with genuine traders and not individuals merely looking for quick bargains and one off items.

Advantages of Dropshipping

Working with dropship companies has numerous advantages for small companies and individuals looking to earn part time or even full time income. Following are some of its benefits.

- The dropshipper researches for products and provides their lists/catalogues of available items at trade prices - one can sell any of these items by any method they wish

- The dropshipper acts on the order - Only when the item has been sold and the payment has been received, the dropshipper is asked to fulfil the order

- The dropshipper packages the orders – No packaging costs are involved at the end of the seller

- The dropshipper sends the orders out direct to the customer – No delivery costs and efforts are associated with the seller

- The dropshipper is transparent to the customer - As far as the customer is concerned their purchase has come directly from the seller

- The dropshipper holds all the stock – No warehouse or storage issues at the end of the seller

- All the seller has to do is concentrate on sales and marketing and banking the profits!

Dropshipping Pitfalls

While it is true that the profits can be gigantic, the seller effectively has to rely on the goodwill and professionalism of the dropshipper/wholesaler. Eventually, one should always keep in mind that should the deal go raw (for instance, the dropshipper supplying a faulty product or a downright incorrect one), it will be the seller's reputation that will take hit. The end buyer cares nothing for whether the seller used a dropshipper or not; all they truly care about is receiving the product that they paid for. For that reason, dealing with unconfirmed dropshippers can be risky.

Additionally, profit margins can be low when working with smaller dropshipping companies. Typically the biggest discounts from manufacturers go to larger volume resellers who further pass their discounts to sole traders and individuals. Using smaller dropshipping companies one might end up paying much more per unit of product than by contacting manufacturers direct. Most manufacturers refuse to deal with individuals, but many will offer low volume quantities at wholesale price. For a fast selling product it could be worthwhile buying small quantities directly from the manufacturers.

How To Make Money Online With Drop Shipping

In this article I want to talk about a way to make money online that anyone can do once they understand it. I am talking about making money on the internet with drop shipping.

For you drop shipping is a type of retailing where you do not keep your products in stock, but instead pass the order and shipping details to a wholesaler, who then dispatches the goods to the customer directly. You make your profit on the difference between the wholesale price you are billed and retail price you sell it for.

It sounds easy enough so how do you get started.

First of all you need to find a product that people are going to want to buy. A quick way to do that is look at what people are searching for online. You can do a keyword search here to see how many times that word is being searched in a particular month: http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion

The more a word is being searched the more it may contain a product that will be in demand. Let's do one for the keyword phrase "baseball" without the quotation marks. This brings up over 500,000 searches at the time I am writing this. By looking at the list you can see potential products to sell including baseball bats, baseball cards, baseball equipment, baseball gloves, and so on.

Next we need a place to provide the products. Do a Google search for the words "baseball equipment affiliate program" and one that comes up in position one is baseballwarehouse.com. When we go to their website we see that they do have an affiliate program. Clicking on that link shows us that they are eager to have people like you selling their products and all you have to do is fill out a short form provided by Commission Junction who manages their affiliate program for them.

They are going to provide you with the products, collect the money, drop ship all products for you and even allow you to provide a coupon coded with your affiliate number for phone orders. You make money on all of your sales and never handle the product. This is the beauty of drop shipping. No warehouse needed, no office staff, no inventory, nothing!

In the case of baseballwarehouse.com if you have a website they will provide you with banners and links to place on your site leading to your affiliate site which generates business for you.

This approach will work for any product you want to sell and have drop shipped for you. A key point for you to make money online with drop shipping is to find several companies to partner with and then find out who you like to work with. Obviously your commissions are important, but other considerations on who you drop ship from is things like quality of products, how reliable they are, and how easy they are to do business with.

If this appeals to you then get started today and find a few good companies to partner with and start making money online with drop shipping.

eBay: Secrets For A Successful Wholesale Empire

Have you seen those big star certified power seller identifications given to certain amount of eBay sellers on numerous auctions? They are everywhere on eBay. There are certain requirements you need in order to become a money making power seller giant on eBay, and ultimately own a wholesale empire through successful selling.

I’m going to discuss the most important start-up knowledge and tools you need for a successful power seller monthly experience and clarify many of the myths that have been around on the net for years.

Power seller Secret Number 1: In order to start in the right track for a successful eBay power selling experience you need to know learn how to do online research. It is truly vital that once you decide to start a business, you start with the vital step named “research”.

How to do online eBay research? For the sake of the article I am going to discuss the manual free way of doing it immediately. There are many paid tools you can use to cut your research time, however, getting to know how to do research on your own is highly recommended.

First, you need to go to eBay’s home page and on the left side of the main page you will see multiple categories. You will then search and locate a category, once you have located the appropriate category for your niche, you will do a search on eBay for main keywords relating to that niche category you have selected and see how much popularity and competition there is for that certain category.

If you did a search and found over 20,000 or more listings for that certain keyword and niche, you know that you find a profitable niche, however, the only draw to such niche is that competition is very high. If you are a seasoned starter on eBay, I will not recommend starting up a business in such high competitive category since you are most likely to stumble hard at the beginning and most likely will end up later on saying, that making an online business on eBay does not work and that the ultimate way to profit from it, is if you started from the beginning, big time myth. I have mad e$1,000’s by selling in high competitive niches, you just need to do the right research and get some background experience to support possible flaws you will possibly encounter.

So my recommendation for your first step. Do a wide research relating your item that you feel passionate and try it only if you already have some selling experience on such auction portal. An experience seller is someone that has at least 200 feedback or more. If you are starting on such auction giant, start making your own garage sell and learn how selling process works by trying different selling angles, presentations and items. You will plenty of experience by then.

Power seller Secret Number 2: Selecting a real wholesaler or distributor. It is imperative to choose a correct wholesaler or distributor for your item(s). Today, there are hundreds if not thousands of middleman scams in the wholesale industry. It is vital that you know your potential wholesaler and distributor background. How do you search for such hidden gems?

Again, you can do it manually or you can pay for a list of potential distributors in your field. However, be warned that 98% of those wholesale list around the same eBay search are completely outdated and incorrect, just to confirm it in fancy words.

You need to know that a real wholesaler does not advertise on the search engines of the Internet. They don’t need to. A real distributor as well a genuine wholesaler gets plenty of business already from offline corporations. It is imperative that you understand this fact.

So how do you find one for your eBay experiment? You search for a top dollar wholesale list that can support their claims or reach a top successful seller to advice you in exchange of compensation.

I have done both, and thanks to it I have been very much profitable for it. The simplest way to get a good list of a true distributor and wholesaler is to pay an authority wholesale company or guy for this. Many successful business entrepreneurs will be willing to give a list of phone numbers and website address to get more information and top sources for different kind of items. Make sure to offer top dollar for this and they will most likely give you such sources as most of the business starters that ask for such list, never take the business serious or make it because they don’t follow the top step mentioned above.

The other way around is to send the eBay seller an email asking him for a distributor list. As long as your business does not conflict with him or is potential competition to him, you won’t have a problem. Make sure to prepare a nice one hundred word letter with a simple inquiry.

Most people don’t follow these primary steps and fail. The steps probably look simple or ridiculous, but they work and I as many others had made $1,000’s on eBay thanks to following the right steps and correct diligence.

How To Sell On Ebay: Pricing Strategy

Many new Ebay sellers make one of two mistakes: either they overprice items to an unsellable extreme; or they lose money on every transaction by setting low starting prices with no restrictions.

In this lesson, I am going to go over which pricing strategies to use and when if you are using a ten-day auction setup.

Strategy #1

If you are listing a popular item that you are confident will sell for a high price, one strategy you can use is the ten-day, one cent starting price, no reserve auction. This is the best way to start a bidding war: pull in bidders early with a low starting price and no reserve and give them ten days and two weekends to battle it out.

Depending on the profit-margin of the item and the quality and number of your competitors, you may want to consider using listing upgrades, such as bold, highlight, and feature listing options to ensure your auction sticks out of the crowd.

Please note that I do not recommend this strategy for beginners. This is extremely high risk if you do not know how to take the risk out of it - and this is not something I can teach you. You must determine this by assessing your own personal inventory with tests.

Strategy #2

Now, if you are new to Ebay or want to list an item with undetermined popularity, you can use a safer, but potentially as profitable bidding strategy for ten-day auctions.

You still wont use a reserve with this strategy. But instead of setting the start price low to encourage a bidding war, you are going to set your start price to your ideal selling price - and then couple it with a buy it now price that is slightly higher.

This will put pressure on the buyer to buy it now instead of watching. If she waits, she gains absolutely nothing--and she risks someone else bidding (and ruining the low BIN price) or just snatching it with the BIN option.

In addition, knowing that she will lose nothing anyway, she will realize that she can get the item up to ten days sooner if she uses the BIN option to order it then, rather than waiting for the auction clock to tick down.

The strategy I described above is very safe. I use it for the majority of my auctions and I always get positive results. At worst, it will take me 3-4 weeks to sell an item, but I wont ever lose money. I just adjust the price to compensate for additional fees.

Strategy #3

Another effective way to use a ten-day setting is in conjunction with dutch auctions--or auctions that sell a number of the same item. Ten-day auctions will give you the longest amount of time to move the highest amount of products.

You may also want to feature ten-day dutch auctions, depending on what items you are selling. If you’re selling information products and rely on the quantity of sales for profit, this wont be effective; but if you’re selling a number of expensive, high profit-margin items, featuring your auction is probably a good idea.

If none of these strategies works for you, you should consider the following two things: 1) the price other Ebay businesses sell your product for. If someone else IS selling your product, there is a reason for it - and it’s probably the price. If you cannot afford to sell at a reasonable price, you need to find a new source to buy from. And if your product’s price is reasonable, then 2) you need to redesign your auction and find new ways of pulling in targeted traffic.

The Secrets Of Making Money With Adsense

Everyone is searching for the online secrets to making money, and many people will tell you that the easiest way to make money online with the Google Adsense.

With Google Adsense ,you don't have the problem of dealing with customers, dealing with sales staff, or dealing with customer support. AND, many people are earning significant amounts every month with Google Adsense.

So, What are the secrets of earning money from Google Adsense?

Essentially, there are no real secrets - it's all just common sense.

If you are able to create a simple website, then you are capable of earning money from Google Adsense. You just need to apply a few common sense tips to your website building process, and you can maximize your potential income from Google Adsense.

So, what sort of tips are we talking about?

The tips can be broken down into four main areas:-

1. Ad placement and design
2. Identification of niche markets
3. Volume
4. Traffic

Let’s discuss each one briefly.

Ad placement and design - The best position for your ads is within the top section of the page. You should change the coloring of the ads to blend in with your website. You will get best results by using blue for the title of the ad so that it looks like a normal link, and use black for both the text and the URL. Make sure that the ads do not have borders around them, so that they look as much like a normal part of your webpage as is possible.

Identification of niche markets - Everyone hears about the keywords which produce clicks for $40 and $50 each, and many people attempt to build web sites which will attract adverts for these keywords. However is very difficult to attract visitors who will produce clicks for these keywords, so you a much better off spending time to identify markets where there are not many competing web sites, but where the value of the clicks would make it profitable for you.

Volume - By volume I mean the number at all pages that you have indexed in the various search engines. Simple mathematics will tell you that if you only have 20 pages which indexed you are unlikely to make as much as if you have 20,000 pages indexed. This does not mean that you need to build sites with 20,000 pages as an alternative you could build 100 sites with 200 pages each. Notice, also that word “indexed”. It does you no good if you have websites on your server which are not indexed in any of the search engines – if no-one can find your sites, you are unlikely to get clicks on your Google Adsense ads.

The people who are learning significant amounts of money with Google Adsense have many web sites. Most of them use software tools to produce their websites because producing many websites by hand is just too time-consuming. A great number of the tools currently on the market, produce junk websites that give no real benefit to the visitor. You will be more successful with a software tool which produces a quality website that will provide a benefit to the visitor. Newer tools on the market, such as my own Website Article Wizard, will produce quality content filled websites quickly and easily, which will be as good, if not better, than hand-created sites.

Traffic - No matter how many web sites you have you'll earn nothing from Google ad sense if there is no traffic coming to your web sites. With no visitors, you have no one who will click on your ads, and, without clicks, you will not earn anything. This means that in addition to building your web sites filled with content, you will need to spend some time getting links to the web sites so that the web sites will achieve rankings in the search engines.

If you follow these simple procedures, you will be able to build web sites that will earn income from Google Adsense. Some of these procedures are time consuming, and there are many tools which can help you to speed up either the web site creation and the link building process, but there is nothing stopping you doing all these procedures manually if you are a tight budget.

Everything that I have told you is just common sense, and that’s the real secret to earning money with Google Adsense - you only need apply common sense and effort to be successful.

Five Secrets to Effective Pay-Per-Click Advertising

With so many companies swarming the World Wide Web with their products, how can you and your products and services stand out?

Your ready answer would most likely be effective marketing. But how? How can you catch the eye of a surfer skimming carelessly through web pages? How can you keep the attention of a typical website reader who spends no more than 30 seconds to read any given article online? How can you garner sales online?

One marketing technique is to be listed in search engines – but again, with thousands of companies offering the same products and services as you, how can your scream for attention be heard?

One technique is pay per click advertising, or PPC. You write out and place an advertisement in a search engine, list yourself under keywords of your choosing, and bid on the placement of your ads. This narrows your field to the people who are actively searching for your products and services.

If someone finds the ad and clicks it, that person goes to your website, and you pay the bid price. As a rule, the higher you bid, the higher your ad goes in the list of search results for a certain keyword, and the more people will go to your site.

PPC can be used to widen your reach, but it can be very expensive, especially if people click your ad only out of curiosity, or if you bid on more keywords than your budget can handle. However, PPC can get you customers and increase your profits. If done well, it can earn you money.

Here are five tips to get the most out of PPC.

Get Ten Specific Keywords. If you are a company specializing in exercise equipment, don't select "exercise equipment" or "gym" as your keywords. Chances are, there will be hundreds of thousands of other bidders waiting to jump on those same keywords. Be specific. Try "treadmill" or "stationary bike." Select a maximum of ten words, just to test the waters and see how your potential customers respond.

If the first ten keywords succeed in getting you a larger market, then research additional keywords which are not as specific. However, if your first try yields less than satisfactory results, then try another set of keywords if you can still afford it.

Write Your Ads but Write the Truth. Most ad writers will broadcast their wares as being the be-all and cure all of all ills and pains. If they do this, web users will click on their ads and storm the site. This is well and good if the product or service will live up to the ad's promise – but what if it doesn't? A customer clicks, you pay, but the customer doesn't buy. You lose.

Write a succinct but accurate ad that doesn't sue vague language. Avoid using words such as "free," "low cost," "extremely effective," and "cheap." Tailor your ads to fit the keyword, and if you can, include your prices on the ads. This way, you will get a buyer who is ready and willing to purchase your product or service.

Budget Your Bid. It's tempting to go all out and set your prices, especially if you think your product will sell. But what if it won't? Set a monthly budget of about $100 for your bids, and bid just right – bid too high and you will run out of money, bid too low and your ads won't show up.

Even if you believe in your product, keep within bid budget, and do not get into bidding wars, especially with another advertiser who has a much larger budget than you. Don't waste your time thinking about your bids. Instead, invest your time in designing what your ad is linked to, which brings us to:

Make Your Site a Professional One. The standard rules of web design apply. Check your web content for spelling and grammatical errors. Update your web content regularly. Fix any broken links and images. Design your website so that it will be easy to navigate and load, so do not use Flash animation, as this will slow down your buyers' browsers. Link your ads to the exact place on your site where your product or service appears.

Know When to Stop. PPC ad campaigns can lead more buyers to you, but take care to check profit against spending. If you have already spent double your advertising budget, but have had little or no sales, consider dropping your campaign. You can also measure your progress in clicks. A total of 300 clicks is average for any ad. If your ad has reached 300 clicks and you have made no sales yet, then terminate your PPC project.

Equally as important as knowing when to stop is knowing that all is not yet lost and you can still go on. Running a web-based business means investing time, money, and effort, so keep your PPC up and running as long as you are raking money in. PPC, after all, may first mean pay-per-click, but, if you're successful, can soon mean Profiting Perfectly in Cash.

Accept Credit Cards Online Without a Merchant Account

There are two major ways to accept credit cards on your website. The first and most expensive is to have your own merchant account. Not only is this option expensive, it also requires extensive credit checks, lots of paperwork, and usually takes days or weeks before you get approved. Fortunately, there is an alternative.

Third party payment processors who will accept credit card payments on your behalf exist in growing numbers. These third party processors will take a percentage of your sale for their troubles, then pass on the rest to you. Rates vary greatly from one payment provider to another so doing your homework is important in order to get the right fit for you. Some payment providers will accept all kinds of goods and services while others specialize in only digital products, or hard goods, or services.

General Purpose Payment Providers include:

Paypal – Owned by Ebay, Paypal offers one of the lowest rates of any third party payment processor. At the time of this writing, their standard rates were 2.9% plus $0.30 US per transaction. Paypal offers excellent support and great documentation to get you up and running in no time at all. www.paypal.com

2checkout.com – Has a $49 US one time setup fee. Their rates at the time of this writing were $0.45 US plus 5.5% transaction fee. Discount rates are middle of the pack, service is very good and through them, you can accept most major credit cards. www.2checkout.com

Digital Information Payment Providers include:

Clickbank – You pay a one time $49.95 US activation fee. They then pay you the retail price of your product minus $1 and a 7.5% fee. Clickbank also has an easy to use affiliate program so that you can make money when others sell your product. www.clickbank.com

Digibuy – An electronic commerce solution for publishers of software, shareware, electronic art, information, and data. They charge a rate of 13.9% per transaction with a $3 US minimum order. They provide you with many features including brandable order forms, invoicing and test orders. www.digibuy.com

All but Clickbank give you the ability to have brandable shopping carts. This allows you to customize your order forms so that the customer doesn't feel like they are leaving your site thereby building trust. All of the third party payment processors above provide you with help to get started.

Accepting credit cards online doesn't have to cost you a lot of money. Most times it doesn't even have to include a credit check. Most of these services will even make regular deposits directly into your bank account for ultimate convenience.

When you need to accept credit cards quickly and inexpensively, one of the payment providers mentioned above just might fit the bill.

Ecommerce for Beginners

Like most average persons, I wanted some extra money to supplement my regular income. I had considered a part time second job at times, but hated that option because it would take me away from the family, make me more tired and probably just pay minimum wage. I also wanted to be able to work from home.

I had surfed the internet for years and had often considered the idea of participating in the internet revolution. I had read some statistics on the use of internet and the increasing numbers of homes with computers and the increasing percentage of Christmas shopping done over the internet. So I decided to jump in with both feet.

First what is ecommerce? The online world designates web sites devoted to retail sales as an e-commerce site. E-commerce sites sell either information or hard goods such as cameras or knifes. E-commerce sites also have Shopping Carts and Payment Gateways attached to them that non-sales web sites do not need.

Ok……so you want to develop an E-commerce site. You are now probably asking do I have enough skill, mental patience or aptitude to be successful?

Well if you have average intelligence, I believe that you and thousands of people just like you could have an E-commerce web site. All that is required is the willingness to learn a few things, patience, and the determination to apply yourself.

How? I am glad you asked.

Let’s begin. We first need to discuss the basics components you will need.

1. Computer 2. Internet connection 3. Site building software 4. Graphics Software 5. Web hosting company 6. Shopping cart 7. Payment gateway

The above elements are where most people stop when they think of what they will need when they want to start an ecommerce site. However, there are other elements that need to be considered, such as getting legal and product sourcing.

Items 1 and 2 above are pretty straight forward and most people can understand why they are necessary. The other items however are a little more complex. Site building software allows the beginner to construct a web site without knowing html programming code. What is Html programming Code?

Html is the programming language of the internet and stands for Hyper Text Mark Up Language. The two best software programs currently available to write Html are Microsoft’s FrontPage 2003 or Macromedia’s Dreamweaver. These programs are more correctly known as HTML Editors.

These two programs are the best ones available. I have them both but use FrontPage 2003 primarily. I think FrontPage 2003 is easier to use and does better tables then Dreamweaver. Most professional web site developers, however consider Dreamweaver the better of the two because some claim it has more features, but I find it is a little more complicated to use. I would recommend that you surf the internet and read the reviews on both of these programs and make you own choice.

Next you will need a good graphic program such as Adobe Photoshop 6. A graphics program allows you manipulate the size of images create images in different formats and create special effects. “PhotoShop 6” is the current version from Adobe and is the best software program for graphics. Adobe “Photoshop Elements” can also be used, but is a limited version of the full Photoshop software. The programs from Adobe are expensive so shop around for the best price.

Web hosting is very important and you need to comparison shop for features first, not on price. Web hosting and ecommerce are extremely related, and learned by personal experience the mistake trying to separate ecommerce from web hosting. The web host company is the company that rents room on their server for your web site, but they can much more. They can offer an integrated shopping cart.

The shopping cart is the heart of the ecommerce web site. The shopping cart for all intents and purposes runs your ecommerce web site so it is critical to get a good one. It contains and displays the products you intend to sell. It also does other neat administrative functions that will make your store easier to run. There are some stand alone shopping carts for sale but most come with web hosting service attached.

The "Payment Gateway" is the cashier in the store and is also known as a "Merchant Account." This is basically a business credit card account. The payment gateway allows your se store to accept credit cards and transfer money to you. Merchant Accounts are very important and you should also carefully review their services and prices. If you do not get a merchant account you are pretty much limited to papal. Search the web and check out the available shopping carts and payment gateways.

Now what are you going to sell, and where are you going to get it? You can look every where for the products you want to sell. How do you know what will sell well? You need to do some market research. Not everything sells well, including electronics. If you have no preference on what to sell, find some marketing software that will allow you to determine which products ell well online.

Next, you will need a source for those products. Assuming you are not making them yourself. The best way is to drop ship them. The trouble is finding a reliable drop ship source and avoiding the imposters.

Once you find you product source you need to open an account and stock your store and start selling. There munch more to an ecommerce store then can be explained in a brief article format. As someone who recently went from zero to an online store Cynscorion.com), I know first hand of the pit falls that await the beginning ecommerce site builder.

If you want to learn more about what to avoid in building an ecommerce site go to either: www.cynscorion.com and go to the bottom of the page and click on "Ecommerce Book For Beginners" ,or go to: http://cynscorion.com/store/cart.php?page=what_yofuture_release_of_a_very_unique_ecommerce_book This book is for people undecided on whether to start an ecommerce site and want to find one point of reference to assist them in making their decision.

Lastly, I wish you good luck and success in your ecommerce endeavors. If I can do it, so can you!

The Basics of Email Marketing

Email marketing is often used in conjunction with web sites as a means to make the most of their traffic. In fact, some web sites exist to do little more than collect lists of people to use for eMail marketing by way of newsletters or eZines. It has some terminology associated with it, and while it all sounds very complex, it boils down to these fairly simple concepts.

Mailing list

This is a list of all the people who've given you permission to e-mail them, also known as an opt-in list. Opt-in lists are collected with forms on web sites, check boxes on thank-you notices, or some other way that asks if a person would like to be emailed again. My recommendation is to never send a advertising email to someone who hasn't opted in, and when in doubt, obey the first rule of spamming: DON'T.

You can do list collection and management yourself with software, or hire services to do them for you. You can also insure your own safety by double opt-in, which is where you send an email to someone who joined your list asking them to confirm their entry. This covers you in the event of a spamming accusation by giving you proof permission was given.

In addition, you must give people a way to leave your opt-in lists, or opt-out. Usually, this is done with a link, which you may have seen at the bottom of any legitimate advertising email sent to you. Those that don't have it are spamming you. Probably from a country where they can't be hunted down and thrown into the smallest, darkest hole in the ground jail cell available like they deserve. So remember that if you create a mailing list, you must give the people on it a way to opt-out.

Privacy Policies

This is another necessity to collect any sort of a mailing list. This is a written statement of what you will do and won't do with someone's information once you have it.

If you don't have a written privacy policy, people will be prone not to sign up for your lists. This is because they don't know you from Adam (or Eve) and don't want their names sold to people who spam things like chain letters or online pharmacies. So, to effectively collect a list, promote a privacy policy, and even consider get certification for it from a third-party watchdog like Truste. This demonstrates that you're serious about the privacy of your potential readers and thus more likely to collect them.

Ezines/Email Newsletters

Ezines and email newsletters are the online, email versions of their paper magazine and newsletter counterparts. To create them, you collect a mailing list, then mail it a content-filled ezine or newsletter they want to read and matches the topics you said it would cover when you advertised it. You may have seen requests to join a mailing list of this sort in pop-up windows that drop when you visit some sites. While that's not the only way to request someone join a mailing list, it's one of the more effective ones, which is why those dumb windows keep appearing everywhere.

What do you do with an ezine or email newsletter that makes all this trouble worthwhile? You can sell ads to other parties (and the more widespread your ezine, the more they are worth per copy), keep in touch with a customer base, or promote your own products and affiliate programs. As the size of your mailing list grows, so do the number of people that may convert on any given ad, which means the promotion of sales, specials, or your affiliate programs produce more money per run. This is why so many people put a priority on collecting mailing lists and then utilizing them.

To keep readers, remember the bottom line: Content. You put ads in your content. You write interesting and useful things in your content. You keep on topic in your content. And if you stop providing content, you'll start losing readership. It's the same concept as you opening a magazine off the rack and seeing nothing but ads. You wouldn't be reading it long, and neither would anyone else.

Autoresponders

Autoresponders are pre-typed, timed emails that work without your input. They'll do this whenever you've set them up to go, such as form thank-you letters after sales, sending out notices, advertising promotionals and contests, or other things to insure your customer or visitor base keeps coming back. You just get the copy right and the automation does the rest.

Autoresponders can also be used to increase conversion rates by slowing wearing away at potential customer resistance. They can do this by explaining relevance, educating about the worth of your product, keeping the product fresh in the customer's mind, or creating a sense of urgency. And it does it all without you having to constantly pursue your own leads. They work with both affiliate programs or selling your own product.

These things are an overview of basic email marketing and will point you in the right direction if you want to use email with your web site.

20 Ways To Increase Website Traffic and eBook Sales

Here's a fast, easy list for you. Use it as checklist to see what you need to do to increase traffic. Or use it as a review list if you have already been working on improving your website traffic. It will help you find ways that you might have known or forgotten.

1. People love to receive free or win free stuff, whether they really need it or want it. A free eBook is perfect to satisfy those needs over the Internet. They will visit your website to get the free valuable information.

2. Give away the full version of your eBook in exchange for testimonials. You can use these customer statements to improve your ads' effectiveness.

3. When you create an eBook, you change your image to "Expert." This will gain people's trust and they will buy your main product or service quicker.

4. Publish your website in eBook format. Put the eBook on a disk or CD-ROM then include it with your direct mail packages. This can increase the number of people that buy your product or service.

5. Offer your eBook as a free bonus for buying one of your main products or services. People will buy the product or service more often when you offer a free bonus.

6. Allow people to download your free eBook, if they give the e-mail addresses of 3 to 5 friends or associates that would be interested in your eBook. This will quickly build your e-mail list.

7. Create a directory of websites in eBook form. List peoples websites in the directory that will agree to advertise the eBook on their website or e-zine (electronic newsletter). This will give them an incentive to give away or advertise your eBook.

8. Allow other people to give away your free eBook. This will increase the number of people that will see your ad in the eBook. You could also include a mini catalog of all your product or services that you offer in the eBook.

9. Gain new leads by having people sign up and give you their contact information before they can download your eBook. This is a very effective way to conduct market research.

10. Make money selling advertising space in your eBook. You could charge for full-page color ads, classified ads or banners ads. You could also trade advertising space in your eBook for other forms of advertising.

11. Give away the eBook as a gift to your current customers as a way of letting them know you appreciate their business. Place an ad in the eBook for a new back end product you are offering

12. Get free advertising by submitting your eBook to freebie and freeware/shareware websites. This will increase the number of people that will download your eBook and see your ad.

13. Make money by selling the reprint rights to those that would like to sell the eBook. You could also make even more money by selling the master rights. This would allow other people to sell the reprint rights.

14. Hold a contest on your website so people can win your eBook. You will get free advertising by submitting your contest ad to free contest or sweepstakes directories. Just make sure you publicize the winner's information -- they love the acknowledgment.

15. You will gain valuable referrals from people telling others about your eBook. Word of mouth advertising can be very effective.

16. Make money cross promoting your eBook with other people's products or services. This technique doubles your marketing effort without spending more time and money on your part.

17. Increase your e-zine subscribers by giving away your eBook to people that subscribe to your e-zine. This will give people an incentive to subscribe. Allow your e-zine subscribers to also give it away to multiply your subscribers.

18. Give away the eBook to people that join your affiliate program. This will increase the number of people that subscribe. You could also create an eBook for them to use that will help them promote your product or service.

19. Give away the eBook in exchange for people leaving their contact information. This will help you follow-up with the prospects that buy your main product or service.

20. Offer a free eBook that contains a couple of sample chapters. If they like it, give them the option of ordering the full version. It would work just like a software demo or shareware.

You will want to print this list and keep it in your website improvement file if you aren't quite ready. Or add it to your planning list.

You Can Earn A Fortune Creating And Marketing Your Own Ebooks

There is no argument that information products will continue to be a hot seller on the internet. People surf around looking for information on every topic imaginable. If you have, or can research and gather information on a hot topic, you can make huge sums of money selling it online.

Many people, just like you, have made massive amounts of money by selling their information products on the internet. And so can you.

Every day more and more people use the internet to search for the information they want. They want information that will help solve their problems. And they want it instantly.

With ebooks, you can deliver the information they want instantly. Ebooks are books in electronic format. This means your customers can instantly download your ebook from your website. No need to wait days waiting for the ebook to arrive. Your customers can be anywhere in the world. They can still download your ebook once their payment has been processed.

You can make money whether you're sitting in front of your computer or not. Your website does the selling for you. Your website takes the order and delivers the product without any involvement on your part. You can go on vacation, anytime you want without having to worry.

You don't have to have special training to be able to do this business. This is a simple business anyone can operate. It is a business where you can start with little investment, and still become hugely successful.

You can always find a hot subject to write about and people will always buy information. Especially when they can get it instantly.

From my own research I have determined that it is more profitable to write in the areas of wealth, health, and happiness. People want to know how to save money, how to make more money, how to start a business. They are interested in information on how to lose weight, how to gain muscle, how to improve their sex life, etc. People will always pay to read information covering hobbies.

Before you start creating your information product, research your market to see if there is a demand for this information. You can use keyword tools, such as, Wordtracker and Overture's keyword suggestion tool to find out what people are interested in. You can also visit online booksellers and take a quick peek at their best- sellers.

Once you've determined that your ebook will be a winner, it's time to write it. You just need to create the pages in a word processor, then convert it into an ebook using appropriate software and make it available for download from your website.

If you don't have the time or desire to create your own ebook, you can make money by purchasing resale rights to someone else's products.

Obtaining resale rights to successful products is one of the many ways that you can make money without having to create anything. Then, you can get to keep all the money from each sale. You never have to pay any royalties. Instead of getting a percentage as you would from an affiliate program, you keep 100% of the profits from every sale you make.

It lets you start selling the product right away. All you have to do is make the necessary changes to the sales page, upload it to your server and start making sales.

To sell your product online, you'll need a domain name for your business. Next, you need a website dedicated to selling your product. Make sure that your business has facilities to accept online payments. Once you've created your website and have set up a system to process payments, you need a reliable web host.

Now you're ready for the advertising campaign. You can have the best looking website online. You can have high quality, high demand information products, have your payment processing system set up to process all of your orders. But if you don't have customers, then you won't make money.

So, you have to advertise. You have to drive traffic to your website. If you don't advertise and drive traffic to your website, no one is going to buy your ebook. Advertise your ebook through search engines, ezines, articles, forums and any other means available to you.

Selling information on the internet is a very lucrative business. People will always seek, and pay for information that will enrich their lives. This business has made a lot of people very rich. You too can make a fortune in this multi-billion dollar industry.

What is an eBook?

Many times we get caught up in the ongoing chaos of life and things we know, we take for granted. For us on the web, that means ebooks. We’ve read them, downloaded them, made them, and even published them. But this ain’t for those folks, this is for the newbies.

What is an ebook?

It’s just a fancy word, or better put, a slang word, for electronic book. The same goes for email, if you’re looking for some kind of connection elsewhere. An ebook is a great thing, a book you can read onscreen. If you’ve got a laptop, then great for you!

For those of us that still love desktops, then we read onscreen while eating and cutting our fingernails and watching the news and writing down our grocery list.

So don’t fantasize about the ebook phenom, it’s a phase. Like Jordache jeans or American Idol or beta video. So now that you know what an ebook is, the next question is simply – what is it good for?

What is an ebook good for?

The endless ways to use an ebook can be frustrating when you’re new because you want leverage, you want the facts. What is it good for? How can an ebook have more advantages than a regular book?

Since you’re new, you don’t know the value of an ebook. The ebook is a phenom because it balances the ground for common folks. Now, through an ebook, you can share, publish, and connect your mind with anyone around the world.

* No need to wait for those major publishing houses to call you.

* No need to worry about printing and publishing costs.

You write your ebook, edit it best as you can, and publish it. Trust me, that’s a scenario because it won’t be so easy when you start.

You’ll start off thinking long and hard. Setting dates and imagining what the cover will look like. How will I get people to buy this book? And after you brush you teeth and get ready for bed, you lay down and look at the ceiling.

What am I going to write about anyway. . .why write an ebook?

The question that drives us mad in the middle of the night. Too tired to go pee, but too awake to go back to sleep. What do I do? This is the same dilemma with your current problem.

What should I write about?

The answer’s not going to help you, you can write about ANY and EVERYTHING.

There’s millions of people online searching for content and every day, thousands more join in the search for the number one product online.

Information

People crave information, so give it to them. Come on, don’t give me that same lame excuse; I don’t know anything. There’s something buried in your mind, dozens of ideas waiting to be released on paper.

What are you waiting on -- what should I write about in my ebook? Hmmm, let’s see. I don’t know you, you don’t know me. Why trust me?

Well, am I all that? Certainly not, just someone that spent more time than you. And that’s how you should think about ebooks.

There are folks who’ve spent years doing them, of course they’ve got better at it. But the key thing is here that you offer something they don’t have. Yes, your brain.

In that beautiful mass of living tissue lies the secrets and knowledge of your life. And don’t go looking for those big things, it’s little things that will push you out into the web world.

* Know a better way to manage money for clubbing on the weekend?

* Found a better way to save money by using paper bags for lunch during the workweek?

* Found a way to club during the week and use the weekend for your loved ones?

* Know how to set-up a consulting business and hold minutes online for free?

All these things are small, but help people. That’s the only criteria you should be thinking about.

What do I know that can help people? People, not just your neighbors. Despite what you think, we’re more alike than different. So stop playing around so much and get your topic idea. Now that you’ve got out of the way, I know. I know. The same problem I had. How do I organize all this stuff? Organizing your ebook

You’ve decided to write an ebook. Yes, write, not copy or steal. Write your own ebook. You know what you’ll write about. Got your topic, found the points you want to make. But now comes the first roadblock. How do I organize all this stuff? There’s no one right way.

The best thing for you to do is sit down, imagine if you were a newbie to this subject, then write about the steps it would take for you to gain this knowledge.

Taken from that point of view, you can then write the ebook for the reader and not to show off YOU. The reader is there for the information, not to read about you. Trust me, keep yourself out of the ebook and it’ll be more interesting. The reader’s there for one thing.

INFORMATION

Please don’t let her down. She may only try you out once. You only got one chance to touch somebody’s life. Why not be simple and just help them? By helping them, you help yourself.

And by helping yourself, you realize your outline’s done. Now you sit down and breathe a sigh of relief. How do I write this ebook from scratch?

How to write your ebook

If you can talk, you can write an ebook. I didn’t say a good ebook, but you can finish one. The difference is that ebooks sell more from appropriateness and how important is the information in your ebook. This is what readers will look for and ask, what is it worth?

The first thing you should know is that information is different than writing a book, an essay, or other “scholarly” ways of writing. People want info, that’s it.

No introductions, no explaining about the symbols or how what you said goes the same for a drywall presentation. Skip all that stuff!

You got an outline, well my friend, just sit down and write the ebook. Remember it doesn’t have to be poetic or mind-boggling, it must deliver the information. If it does that, then you’re ok.

But to be safe, let a few of your friends read it before you publish it.

Ways to publish your ebook

By the time you read this, there’s going to be many formats and ways to publish. But for right now, to keep it simple, you should focus on one of two ways, pdf or exe. For more information about this information, read my other article (PDF OR EXE?) because it goes in-depth about this decision and will save you hours of heartache and hundreds of dollars on software and low-budget ebooks.

Ten Tips for Generating Traffic To Your Website

I know what you’re thinking, oh great another article about generating traffic to my website. Well it is important for your website to have traffic. It makes absolutely no sense to have the most informative website in the world that no one knows about. This article lists ten low cost ways to generate traffic to your website. Enjoy.

1. Trade links with sites that have high ranking and content similar to yours.

While visitors are important, targeted visitors are really important. If your site is about dogs, it would be silly to trade links with a site that is for people who hate dogs. That would be counterproductive and just does not make sense. No, in order for your link trade to work, it should be with a site that covers the same topic that your website covers.

2. Publish a blog.

I really do not have time to go into all of the benefits of a blog in this article. Just understand that search engines love them and that other bloggers link to other bloggers frequently.

3. Publish your own newsletter.

Now I know what you’re thinking, publish a newsletter? That sounds like a lot of work. Well yes it is, but if you write your newsletter about something you’re interested in, it won’t really seem like work at all. Can’t write your way out of a paper bag? Don’t worry about that, there are lots of places online where you can get free content on a regular basis. Just go to your favorite search engine and type in article directory and you will be amazed at the number of results that come up.

4. Offer some free content relevant to your subject matter.

People love freebies. Make sure that your content is of good quality and related to your subject material. It would also be nice if you required the visitor to leave an email address before receiving the freebie, that way you can build your list that much quicker.

5. Swap ads with other ezine publishers.

Find ezines that match your topic and offer to swap ads with the publisher. Many publishers will agree to this type of arrangement for a short period of time, especially if it is something of value to their subscribers.

6. Participate in online forums

7. Publish your url on everything you distribute (books, business cards, brochures, etc.)

8. Study everything you can about generating traffic.

This is extremely important since the Internet changes minute by minute. Subscribe to ezines, read ebooks, read the forums. All of these sources will help you stay current on the latest Internet trends.

9. Ask successful Internet marketers as many questions as you can think of.

Many Internet marketers want to help you to succeed, especially if you are one of their affiliates. If they help you succeed, they succeed. Remember, the only dumb question is the unasked question.

10. When you see a good idea, use it.

This should almost go without saying, but if you see a great idea, that you can easily implement while doing your research then by all means use it. That is why you are doing all of this research in the first place, right?

Search Engine Optimization

What is the so-called Search Engine Optimization? Does the internet truly provide all the answers? If so how we can be sure it is relevance?

The Internet appears to have an answer for every query one can think of. Type in the search engine box and just a click away a number of keywords or phrases are listed – a process which we called optimization. However, do we really achieve the so-called search engine optimization?

From the term itself Search Engine Optimization refers to “getting the most relevant answer or topics from a search engine.” To make it appear optimized, most search engines arrange the topics in a logical order. For example search engine A shows result from a chronological order, search engine B optimizes the result by sorting each website and pages through keyword density; and finally search engine C optimizes the result by highlighting the titles only.

Here are some suggestions for Search Engine Optimization.

(1) Be as specific as possible with the terms. Most search engines uses the so-called spiders, which will sorts all accessible web resources and pages in the internet which similar to your entered word.

(2) If you’re searching for a specific phrase, put the words in quotes. This is to ensure that your query would be treated as a single concept.

(3) On many search engines you can get more specific results by clicking on the advance search options. Other people refer to it as the true “Search Engine Option” because one could limit and define their searches. Usually there is a form which one should fill in with options such as title, date, author, topic, etc.

(4) If you’re not having luck with your search term, try using a synonym. Otherwise, if you are looking for Foreign words try looking at its English translation. This is useful especially if you are looking for another language or regional dialect. When using a search engine one should open translation software.

(5) If looking for a biography, type the word biography after the person's name in the search engine.

If at your first try you didn’t find any luck in your query. Take a few seconds to take a deep breath and relax then try searching again. Who knows maybe the information you are looking is just being uploaded while you are taking a quick rest. Of course there are other means and ways for you to have the so-called Search Engine Optimization … whether be it on Yahoo!, MSN or Yehey!

Developing The Perfect Affiliate Program

Are you looking for an effective way to market new online customers? Don’t want to pay thousands of dollars for a marketing plan that doesn’t even work? Then an affiliate program could be right for your business. In this article we cover the definition of an affiliate program, what affiliates look for in a program, and how you can offer these features to increase your sales.

So, to begin, what is an affiliate program? An affiliate program is a feature offered by tens of thousands of online stores. Companies offer money, usually a commission, to other businesses for help in promoting their companies’ product/s or service/s. It’s like paying for marketing only when you receive a sale. A successfully designed affiliate program puts hundreds or even thousands of affiliates to work for your company. If designed well enough, you will have to do very little marketing in order to sell your products.

As stated earlier, there are thousands of affiliate programs. Unfortunately, many of these programs are more or less worthless. Affiliates have become educated, and rarely join these poorly developed affiliate programs. It is increasingly important to create an affiliate program that presents affiliates with something worth their time.

According to Jim Gribble, founder of LinkProfits.com, affiliates look for many of the following qualities in an affiliate program:

First and foremost, payment is given for sales made
Payments are made at least monthly
There is a believable payment threshold
Quick customer service responses
Most affiliates research potential programs with great scrutiny. There is no room in the online community of affiliate programs for those who do not pay their dues. Businesses that run their affiliate programs with late or nonexistent payments do not last long. Also, affiliates researching your company do not easily trust programs that make their payments at increments longer than 1 month. It is best to pay weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly. As affiliates research your program, they also look for a payment threshold that seems believable. A program that pays up to $1,000 per week is unlikely to be trusted by an affiliate. Too many companies have offered such high thresholds without the funds to back them up.

Another important aspect of affiliate programs is customer service. Affiliates want responses and they want them quickly. According to Gribble, many potential affiliates send an email to affiliate programs that they are interested in joining. He says that they base their interest in the program upon the timeliness and usefulness of the response given. Although great care must be taken with affiliates, the work they can provide for you is well worth the effort.

Now, let’s discuss the more important issue; developing your affiliate program.

How do you effectively begin an affiliate program? Well, to begin, you should use the resources that you already have, your current customer list. If your business does business to business transactions, you have a wealth of resources. However, even business to consumer companies have potential to gain affiliates by speaking with their current customers. As long as they are not spamming, customers can tell their friends about your great product/s or service/s. And with money involved they may be much more interested in giving referrals.

Once you have petitioned your current resources, you need to branch outward. There are many resources, paid and free to help you in this effort. As stated on the previous page, there are many online affiliate directories where affiliates can search for your program. A quick search on Google for "affiliate program directories" will bring up a handful of great companies that you can register with.

Besides these often free directories, there are also paid affiliate consultants. These professionals help those managing affiliate programs to find affiliates. For those with the money to invest in one of these professionals, will more than likely find great success with little or no effort.

As with becoming an affiliate, one of the most important aspects of managing an affiliate program is getting the word out. Let other businesses know the benefits of your program. Be open and honest with those researching your program. Place links in newsletters, on banners ad programs, in offline advertisements and in any other marketing you do for you business. If you are truly offering good benefits that you can actually provide, with the appropriate marketing, you are guaranteed potential affiliates.

-> And the risks of sharing a server with other customers.

As a business owner, you need an Internet presence. After choosing and registering a domain name, your next step is to decide on a web host. Although a lot of options are available to you, but you need to make the first decision between shared hosting or dedicated hosting.

Since lower cost is directly proportional to shared hosting, the same is mostly the usual choice. A service provider could set up a new account for you on an existing server for as little as $5 a month in just a few minutes.

However, there are limits to what you can do. The bandwidth usage affects you and your usage affects them whenever you are sharing the server with many other customers. A website with heavy data base queries could bring everyone on that server to a standstill and the same goes for the processor time. Customized software installations will have little or no opportunity and the file storage limits will also be relatively low.

But many small businesses never feel that pinch. Their hosting needs are simple and few.

Internet Hosting Companies

When selecting a web hosting company, there are many issues that need to be addressed.

Before signing off with a website hosting company, you should be aware of the following summary of areas. The partnership based on honesty and quality service is equivalent to a successful web hosting company. Customer service is often overlooked, but problems arise more then we would like to admit.

Customer support

Does the company offer true 24/7 supports? You'll come across many cheap web hosting companies claiming to offer dedicated 24/7 customer service, but in reality it may take days to get a reply. Phone support through customer service is always a big plus as nothing could be better then being able to pick the phone and get in touch with someone who can help you with any problems you might come upon.

Low price/Contract length:

Hosting package deal advertised by a web hosting company may advertise the price for a one or two year plan. I have personally come across a lot of these while looking for cheap web Hosting. Always make sure to check on the rates whenever the payments will be due. Before committing to a one year or two year contract is the last thing you want to do as you might find out after a month or two, that the service is slow or down a lot.

Unlimited bandwidth:

If a lot of traffic is being generated by your website, many companies will use this tactic to try to sell you as the same will end up costing the company. Many companies feel that most clients won't use a lot of bandwidth and therefore offer unlimited bandwidth since they average out across the entire client base.

Another selling point for some companies though we won't often see it, is the Unlimited Disk Space offer. Most web hosting company pays for disk space and if you are using a lot of disk space you may find it difficult to access your server or upload more files. Read the plan agreement and make sure they can't drop your account for high disk space usage, or find a different web Hosting company.

Domain Name - How To Pick One

Picking a domain name should be easy, right? Why, I’ll just use my business name. Not so fast, Sparky. A good bit of thought should be given to selecting a domain name.

A Cautionary Note

Picking a domain name is like getting married. You are going to have to stick with it till the bitter end. People that use your site will come to know it by the domain name. Repeat visitors will often simply type in the domain name to get to the site, better known as “type in traffic”. As an example, do you search for “Amazon” when you want to buy a book or do simply type in amazon.com? If Amazon were to change its domain name to Desert, there would be a lot of confusion. The same goes with your domain. Once you pick something, stick with it.

Your Choices

Well, the obvious choice is your business name, but it may not be the best. There are four significant issues to consider.

First, is there something about your business name that makes using it as a domain an unwise choice? This situation typically arises if you have a long business name or have plural words. “Halstatt’s Rip’n Marketing Campaigns, Inc.” is going to be a horrible domain name. Clients are going to find it difficult to type in such a domain name.

Double letter problems are a second issue that is entirely unique to the Internet. What if Sams Salon wants to use its business name as a domain? The “s” at the end of first word and beginning of the second can cause confusion. Is the domain name Samssalon.com or Samsalon.com? Confusing your users is a bad way to run a site.

The third issue concerns the nature of your site and search engine optimization. If you are shooting for a particular keyword phrase, you may be better off using that keyword phrase in your domain name. Google, for instance, looks at the domain name when evaluating a site. If the words in your domain name are spaced with dashes, many believe it will help in the ranking process. This is why you see so many xxx-xxxx-xxx.com domain names on the net. If your business focuses on a very specific area, strong consideration should be given to using relevant keywords in your domain name.

Finally, your domain name should end in “.com” and I don’t want to hear any argument or see any rolling of the eyes. The simple fact is that when people think of sites, they always type in .com. Yes, there are other extensions and .us, .net, .biz, etc., may seem unique, but it kills your traffic. Pavlov and his dog experiments had it right. People have been mentally conditioned to type in .com, so don’t select any other ending. If you do, a smart competitor will register the .com version of your name to get some free traffic. If you are really lucky, a porn site will do it!

Take a breath before you select a domain name. Like a spouse, it can be either a good or bad choice.
